Dear Erik and Pat:
\J I have not yet had time to go through all the papers for the
representation issue yet, but already I think that the issue as it
stands may not cover the main controversial issue in representation
theory. This is the controversy over the domains of usefulness of
representation of knowledge by procedures and representation by
sentences in a suitable logical language.\.
\J Therefore, I would like to suggest that we include in the issue
a few solicited short papers stating the points of view. Obviously, at
least two points of view should be represented. Clearly, a representative
of the procedural point of view should come from M.I.T. I would like to
write a short article presenting the advantages of declarative representations
and a point of view concerning the relations among declarative procedural
and other representations.\.
\J Perhaps Pat could find or be the procedural representative. Other
possibilities are Marvin and Seymour and Jerry Sussman. Terry Winograd
may also be interested. He claims to have a balanced point of view. In
order to get these papers in time, they should be very short, say less than
ten typewritten pages.\.
What are your reactions?
Sincerely yours,
John McCarthy
